CHAPTER FIVE

“Ok Prim, relax. Just think of what you’re going to spend your first paycheck on. That usually distracts my girls from any nerves they have,” Veronica jokes in my ear as I sit alone at a small table near a fireplace in a 5-star hotel restaurant. I don’t think I’ve ever even driven through this part of San Diego. Laughter behind Veronica’s voice makes me realize that there are quite a few people keeping an eye on this evening making me feel like I’m the main entertainment to their own private party.

I nervously tug at my all black attire. Pulling the top of my dress up, but making sure to keep some deep cleavage as I’ve been instructed. I tuck the bottom of my short dress under my leg so I’m not flashing the few strings that make up my underwear to the restaurant staff. I’m pretty sure I own tank tops that are longer than the dress that I’m wearing.

“Keep an eye open. Jon just entered the restaurant and is checking in right now,” Veronica instructs me as I swallow my heart back down my throat.

How in the world does she know this? I can’t help but wonder who else is wearing a wire or is monitoring a camera. This is turning out to be a secret mission more than a date at this point.

“It’s my job. Now look alive girl.” A series of hoots and hollers ring through the piece of invisible plastic stuck in my ear.

I look towards the front of the restaurant, trying to find Jon in the midst of a crowd of designer suits and their dates who are wearing next year’s fashion trends. Of course, they could all be doing exactly what I’m doing, or at least trying to do. We could all be a bunch of strangers acting like we know each other. What a strange thought.

“Prim?” Jon asks, as he seems to come out of nowhere, making my heart race even more.

“Yes! Jon, right?” I say and I stand up and give him the appropriate hug that I’ve been taught how to do as the first contact on a first date.

“Did you just arrive? I see you don’t have a drink yet. Would you like me to order us something?” he asks.

“That would be fantastic.” Yes. Alcohol—the saving grace of everyone on a nervous first date.

Jon waves down a waitress who arrives at our table within seconds. As a true gentleman would do, he suggests I order first. Mimicking the sensual French pronunciation that Victoria speaks in my ear, I order a heavy red wine, remembering from Jon’s file that he is a fan of reds. An impressed looking Jon orders the same by telling the waitress to make it two.

“Good job, Prim. You’re a natural, honey” Veronica praises me in my ear.

The waitress returns very quickly with what appears to be two glasses of deep crimson wine in a 24-karat rimmed Swarovski crystal wine glass. Being a well-instructed lady, I let Jon grab his glass first and I follow suit.
